As a seasoned mistake-maker, I’m here to help you know what not to do for a smooth, ideal travel experience at Oktoberfest 2023.
But first…SAVE this now or SEND to a friend going to Oktoberfest!
Here’s what not to do:
🍻Waiting another second to book your hotel🍻
Hotels are SO EXPENSIVE if you haven’t booked one yet, go do this immediately! People book hotels for next year as soon as Oktoberfest is over and the price rises from there.
🍻Thinking you need tent reservations🍻
You can go to any tent and kindly ask a server if there are open seats. You can also scout open seats yourself and ask the tablemates if you can sit there. Tents are free!
🍻Only staying in one tent🍻
Definitely tent hop! They’re all different, and each serve 1 beer unique to that brewery.
🍻Missing Gay Sunday🍻
The first Sunday of Oktoberfest is “Gay Sunday.” It’s extra joyful and inclusive, and if you identify as LGBTQIA+ you’ll feel safe and welcome.
🍻Not dressing up🍻
The majority of people wear the traditional dress: dirndl for women and lederhosen for men. Don’t buy a cheap Halloween costume! Buy or rent the real deal.
🍻Not pacing yourself🍻
The beer is strong and the day is long. Pace yourself! Order radlers (half beer, half lemonade/lemon soda) and no one will tell the difference.
🍻Only staying in the tents🍻
The fairgrounds have rides, food, cultural tents, and more. Ride the ferris wheel for the best views, and poke into the wine tent!
🍻Not having cash🍻
Tents are cash only. There are ATMs, but fees are huge! Stock up in town before you go.
🍻Not exploring Munich and Bavaria🍻
This is a beautiful and culturally rich area of Germany. Go to the top of St. Peter’s Church and just wander the charming streets of Munich.
🍻Going at night/on weekends🍻
If you want a club vibe, go at night. If you want unbearable crowds, go on the weekends. Mornings you’ll have a more cultural experience and it’s way easier to get a seat!
